The public healthcare system in Wales, NHS Wales, has teamed up with two 3D printing companies to improve access to 3D scanning and 3D printing services for their patients. The funding is being provided by the Welsh Government’s Health Technologies and Telehealth Fund and has currently purchased five 3D scanners and one 3D printer for the hospital system.
Both firms are quite familiar with applying 3D scanning and 3D printing technology to medical situations, as they helped create the prosthetic implants that
To complement the scanners, 3D printers can be used to create inexpensive facial or body-worn prosthetic devices, as well as custom splints for burn victims or patients with broken bones, and also to fabricate the aforementioned models that aid in the planning of dangerous surgeries. Physical rehabilitation experts are also able to use 3D printers to manufacture custom wheelchair seats and braces to aid in maintaining healthy and comfortable patient posture.
Together, both technologies will yield great potential for the NHS Wales team. And, with CARTIS and PDR training them, the staff should be in good hands.
